People Living with Disabilities and/or Neurodivergence
Journey understands how your disability may affect your daily life. Let our team help you navigate life with your disability and/or neurodivergence.
Living with Disabilities and/or Neurodivergence
Most of today’s working-age people believe they have a 1-2% chance of developing a disability before the age of 67. In reality, about 25% of those between 20 & 67 will develop a disability impacting their daily life. Society often dismisses people with disabilities or who aren’t neurotypical. At Journey, we understand that the environment we live in presents serious barriers to everyday people navigating life. Just like more than 50% of people could be labled with the term ‘minority population,’ more than 15% of us are currently living with a disability and more than half of us will develop a disability in our lifetime.

What:
Challenges Do They Face?
Erie and the surrounding communities in NWPA present harsh conditions for people navigating life with a disability. Particularly harsh winter weather, long hours of darkness 6 months of the year, broken sidewalks, and inaccessible or accommodating places of business or care present serious challenges for us, especially if we have a disability. Lack of understanding, and stereotypes about neurodivergence, or disability (invisible or physical) are consistent sources of microaggressions, dismissiveness, or outright disrespect. We also know that those with disabilities, visible or invisible, are more likely to struggle with housing insecurity, unemployment, financial stability, and isolation.

How:
Journey's Staff is Relatable to This Niche Explanation
Many people can’t help but notice and feel at home in our space because they can see people with similar life experiences working here. Able-bodied staff collaborate with and learn from our valued staff living with a disability. Neurodivergent and neurotypical staff coordinate care and consult as peers on individual situations. At Journey, we are always learning from each other, guides, staff, and journeyers alike. We address individual concerns with recognition that our intention may be good but it is not always received that way. It is our responsibility to hear how our efforts have impacted you from a non defensive learning posture.
